Description

RUST-OLEUM® 9169 Rust Primer is specifically developed for application on manually derusted (St3) metal surfaces where abrasive blasting is not possible. 9169 penetrates the surface, stops further corrosion, and provides good adhesion for subsequent paint layers. 9169 should be top-coated with 9100 series topcoats and provides the necessary protection in industrial or corrosive environments.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Remove grease, oil, and all other contaminants from the surface by alkaline cleaning or high-pressure washing (steam cleaning) combined with a suitable detergent.

Remove loose rust, rust scale, and failing paint layers manually or with hand tools to St 2/3 (ISO 8501-01:1988). Larger areas can be "sweep blasted" to Sa 2 (ISO 8501-01:1988), blast profile max 50µm.

Sand existing paint layers that are in good condition to break the gloss and obtain a slightly matted surface; also test for compatibility.
The surface must be clean and dry during application.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
The two components must be stirred well individually before mixing. Mix according to the "boxing method" or with a low-speed mixer.

Mixing ratio: base : activator = 1 : 1 (parts by volume)
Induction time* 1 hour for a 5-liter batch at 20°C
Pot life 4 hours for a 5-liter batch at 20°C
* Let the mixed product sit and react before starting application.

THINNING & APPLICATION
Brush: up to 10(vol)%; RUST-OLEUM Thinner 160
Use brushes with long natural bristles
Roller: up to 10(vol)%; RUST-OLEUM Thinner 160
Use polyamide rollers with short pile (perlon 8mm).
Air-atomized spraying: up to 20(vol)%; RUST-OLEUM Thinner 160
Gravity cup or pressure cup
Nozzle: 1.2 - 2.2 mm Pressure: 2 - 4 bar
Check wet film thickness, avoid excessive thickness.
Airless spraying: up to 10(vol)%; RUST-OLEUM Thinner 160
Pneumatic or electric equipment
Nozzle: 0.013 - 0.018 inch Pressure: 125 - 200 bar
Check wet film thickness, avoid excessive thickness.
Cleaning: Use RUST-OLEUM 160 Thinner
Disposable tools should be used.

APPLICATION CONDITIONS
The temperature of the ambient air, the surface, and the material must be between 5 and 35°C, and the relative humidity below 85%.
The surface temperature must be at least 3°C above the dew point.

PLEASE NOTE Maximum dry film thickness per layer: 100µm dry, equal to 175µm wet.
